Reading passage
Jazz Band on the Lawn
Some of my friends in the music program have recently started a new jazz band, and I'd like to suggest that the university invite them to perform free concerts on campus. These performances could be held in the afternoons, giving students a chance to listen to live music while taking a break between classes or other activities. The open lawn near the student center would be an ideal location: lots of students pass through this area during the day, and the lawn was recently renovated, making it a pleasant spot for people to sit and enjoy the music.

Narrator:Now listen to two students discussing the letter.
Man:What did you think of Tim's letter?
Woman:I don't know. It's a nice idea, but I don't think he's really thought it through.
Man:How so?
Woman:Well, he's not considering the problems it would cause. For one thing, I don't think the afternoon is actually a good time for concerts.
Man:Really?
Woman:Yeah. A lot of students don't have time to just sit around and relax then. They're studying, reading, and trying to get classwork done. Loud music in the background would be distracting.
Man:Huh. Yeah, I guess that's true. Woman: Maybe evenings would work better-something to help people unwind after a long day.
Man:That makes sense.
Woman:Also, I think the concerts should be indoors.
Man:Why?
Woman:The lawn near the student center looks great right now, but that won't last if big groups start gathering there. Think about it-students will be walking all over the grass. Normally not many people stand around there, but a crowd for a concert would trample it. The grass would die, and eventually the whole area would just turn into mud.
