Question 1

What does Old TOEFL mean?

Accepted Answer

This area preserves the TOEFL iBT format used before January 21, 2026. It remains useful for extensive academic-English practice but is not the current test format.

Question 2

How was the legacy TOEFL organized?

Accepted Answer

The legacy test used Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing in a linear rather than multistage-adaptive form. Typical section times were about 35, 36, 16, and 29 minutes respectively.

Question 3

How should I interpret Old TOEFL practice scores?

Accepted Answer

Use them to identify strengths and gaps in the earlier 0–30 section framework. If your real appointment is on or after January 21, 2026, prepare with the current TOEFL area for the live task types and score scale.

Question 4

What was in legacy TOEFL Reading?

Accepted Answer

Reading used two academic passages with 10 questions each, for 20 questions in about 35 minutes.

Question 5

How should I answer factual and negative-factual questions?

Accepted Answer

Locate the relevant paragraph, paraphrase the evidence, and compare every option. For a negative-factual item, explicitly mark the three supported choices before selecting the unsupported one.

Question 6

How do I handle inference and rhetorical-purpose questions?

Accepted Answer

An inference must follow from stated evidence without outside knowledge. For rhetorical purpose, ask what job the sentence or example performs in the author’s argument.

Question 7

How do sentence insertion and summary questions differ?

Accepted Answer

Sentence insertion tests reference, transitions, and logical flow at one location. Summary questions test the passage’s major ideas, so reject true details that are too narrow.

Question 8

What was in legacy TOEFL Listening?

Accepted Answer

Listening used three lectures and two campus conversations for 28 questions in about 36 minutes.

Question 9

How do I separate main ideas from details?

Accepted Answer

Write the speaker’s overall purpose at the top of your notes. Record a detail only when it explains, exemplifies, contrasts with, or causes one of the main points.

Question 10

How do I answer attitude and function questions?

Accepted Answer

Listen for tone, hesitation, correction, emphasis, and what prompted the line. The right answer explains why the speaker said it in that moment, not merely what the words mean.

Question 11

What helps with lecture-organization questions?

Accepted Answer

Mark transitions such as first, another explanation, in contrast, and this led to. A quick outline of the lecture’s stages makes organization questions much easier.

Question 12

What were the four legacy Speaking tasks?

Accepted Answer

The section used one independent response and three integrated tasks combining speaking with reading and/or listening. The full section took about 16 minutes.

Question 13

How should I structure the independent response?

Accepted Answer

State a direct position, give one or two specific reasons, and develop a concrete example. Clear development is stronger than listing several undeveloped points.

Question 14

How should I take notes for integrated Speaking?

Accepted Answer

Separate the source positions and record only the relationships you must explain. Use a short template for topic, speaker claim, reason one, reason two, and the key example.

Question 15

What should I prioritize in timed Speaking?

Accepted Answer

Answer the exact task, organize ideas visibly, and keep speaking at a steady intelligible pace. Minor language errors matter less than a response that is incomplete or difficult to follow.

Question 16

What were the legacy Writing tasks?

Accepted Answer

Writing contained a 20-minute Integrated Writing task and a 10-minute Academic Discussion task.

Question 17

How should I organize Integrated Writing?

Accepted Answer

Explain how the lecture challenges, qualifies, or supports the reading point by point. Attribute ideas to the sources and avoid adding your own opinion.

Question 18

What should I write down during the Integrated lecture?

Accepted Answer

Create paired notes: each reading claim beside the lecturer’s response and evidence. That relationship, not a general summary of both sources, is the core of the answer.

Question 19

How should I approach legacy Academic Discussion?

Accepted Answer

Take a clear position, add relevant support, and contribute something beyond repeating the two student posts. Use the final minute to check cohesion and language accuracy.

Question 20

Is the old TOEFL still useful for my current test?

Accepted Answer

Its academic passages, listening, and timed response practice can build transferable English skills. Learn the live task types and timing in the current TOEFL area before your test date.

Question 21

What should I do when a legacy Reading question takes too long?

Accepted Answer

Mark a reasoned answer, keep an eye on the passage-level time, and return to difficult questions if your practice timer permits. Do not sacrifice an entire later passage to one ambiguous choice.
